"One Sentence Storybooks" Review

When I first requested this book for review, I thought it would be a great little book for my 2 year old.  Then it arrived...

This is actually a set of several little booklets, not one book.  That's one reason it wouldn't be great for my 2 year old.  Board books are still the safest bet with her right now.  Haha!  But his set is actually recommended for kids ages 3-5 and now I see why.  Each booklet is simple and colorful.  They each have large, simple, easy-to-read words - perfect for a beginning reader. Each booklet has a small list of beginning vocabulary words - which will be great for teaching reading!  And at the end of each booklet is a simple Bible study for you to do with your child.  It has "one truth to learn," "one verse to say," and "one prayer to pray."  And lastly, to make this book even more education, there's a small set of instructions for your child to follow.  Things like, "point to something white" and "find four dots on a crown."

There are so many things that I love about this set!  First of all, it's a Focus on the Family product, which I love!  And I love that it's both spiritual and educational!  You can use it to let your little one learn new words and practice reading.  They can also use the last section to practice following instructions.  For such a simple set of books, "One Sentence Storybooks" is full of function!!!

One thing that did bother me about these little books was the story of creation.  It said over and over again (as you can see in the picture above) that "God's hand" made the sun, moon, and stars, etc.  The issue I have with that is that the Bible tells us that God spoke the world into existence.  I think this was done in an effort to use the simplest words possible (because its meant to be a beginning readers book) but I would have rather it just said, "God made..."  I may leave this one out when we read these books or I just use it to reinforce the biblical account of creation by asking my little ones "how" God created the earth.

I received a copy of this book, free of charge, from Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for my honest review.

I even quoted from your review on my site, too, so an extra big thank you to you!
