Periodic: A Game of The Elements Review

If you follow my blog, you've seen how interested I've been in gameschooling lately.  Playing games is a GREAT WAY to introduce new information to your students in a fun and inviting way.  Somehow information just seems less intimidating when its in game form.  One of my favorite discoveries in the gameschooling community recently has been the company Genius Games!  The take subjects that can seem very intimidating - like biology and chemistry - and turn it into fun!

With that in mind, the wonderful folks at Genius Games sent me a copy of Periodic: A Game of The Elements for review!  And I have to admit, I am EXTREMELY IMPRESSED by this game!





So here's what I like:
1.) The game is beautiful!  - Seriously!  This game is so inviting and beautiful!  The colors are lovely and the components are fun!



2.) The science behind the game is included! - I love that this game comes with TWO booklets!  The first booklet is the instructions, but the second booklet is full of information on the periodic table of elements!  This is fantastic, because its like a school lesson and game in one!  Genius Games has really done all the gameschooling work for you!



3.) Moving around the board helps you learn the elements without even realizing it! - Since the game board is actually the periodic table, and moving around the board is based on periodic trends, you learn all sorts of info about the elements while playing!  You learn about atomic number, ionization energy, atomic radii, and atomic mass! The goal cards also teach you what elements are involved in things like stainless steel, gas in incandescent light bulbs, and nuclear fuel rods!



4.) The game is fairly straightforward to play! - Although the info can seem intimidating at first - especially if you're not a "science person," the game is really pretty straightforward in terms of mechanics.  You gain and spend energy tokens to move across the board and try to land on the elements listed in the goal cards being used.  The ease of the game can actually make some of these complicated processes you're learning about in the game more accessible!

5.) It makes me want to teach the elements! - I am not a "science person" by nature.  In fact, science is probably the subject that intimidates me the most.  So finding games that not only will interest the kids, but will also get me interested in the subject is a very exciting prospect!
