One of the most exciting things about the board game "Renaissance" that seems to be happening these days, is the benefit of Kickstarter to help bring a game to fruition. This allows for so many wonderful game ideas to come about. And this is where Cheese Quest: The Quest For Cheese got its start! Avoid snap traps, glue traps, roaming cats, and other obstacles as you play a mouse attempting to capture cheese and bring it back to your nest!
What I love:
1.) It involves problem solving and strategy! - You use your cards and moves to inch closer and closer to the cheese you so desperately desire. But be careful! You'll also need to avoid or disarm traps, and stay away from cats who can "spook" you and cause you to drop your cheese! And since the first mouse to make it back to the nest with 2 pieces of cheese wins, you'll also have to use some of your cards to sabotage the other mice!
2.) Multiple Room Tiles allow for variation in the game! - There are 12 double sided Room Tiles in the game, but you only use 6 at a time. This lends itself to lots of possibilities for changing up the configurations of walls, placement of traps and cats, etc.! It's much harder to get bored with a game when the game board can change each time you play.
3.) The game involves reading practice. - Since you're playing cards that have certain abilities, the game involves some reading. This is great practice for younger players! But its not reading "intensive." My 5 year old non-reader can play with a little help.
4.) Although it involves strategy and critical thinking, it's not overly complicated. - After setup, most of the information is found on the cards, so it's not an overly complicated game with tons of rules. This makes it fairly easy to go from reading the instructions to playing the game pretty quickly. I really like that! I have some very complicated games that I enjoy as well, but it can be frustrating to have to wade through mounds of instructions and rules before playing a game. Thankfully, Cheese Quest: The Quest For Cheese is fairly straightforward.
Final thoughts: My kids seemed to really enjoy this game - particularly my 6 (almost 7) year old and my 9 year old. The 6 year old needed help reading cards because she's still learning to read, but that didn't seem to bother her. We went through the game one evening to get a feel for it and after that, my 6 year old begged to play again. It seemed to be a concept she picked up quickly and enjoyed.
I received this game, free of charge from the creator, in exchange for my honest review.
