If you follow my blog or my Instagram page, you probably know that I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting games! I'm especially intrigued by games that teach or reinforce educational concepts that aren't easily found in games. Math is an easy concept to reinforce with games. Even if a game isn't billed as "educational," there's probably some sort of math concept that's reinforced by scoring. But music theory isn't an educational concept that I've found in many games. That's why I was so excited to learn about Lord of the Chords: The Geekiest, Punniest Music Theory Card Game!
Lord of the Chords takes approximately 30 minutes and plays 2 to 4 players. In the game, you're combining note cards to form chords. Be the first person to form 3 chords and win the game!
So here's what I love:
1.) The quality components! - This game is BEAUTIFUL and WELL MADE! The box is sturdy and contains compartments for the various game pieces and cards. There's also an awesome collector's box that looks like a piano! You can fit all the components in this smaller box to take the game with you!
2.) There's an easier, quicker gameplay! - If you're well versed in music theory, this game is right up your alley. But if you are like me and have a rudimentary knowledge of music theory, or if you have younger kids, there's an "Allegro Mode" for gameplay! This is a smaller, quicker game of chord forming that will help you learn your chords and keys! This Allegro mode makes the game accessible to younger kids and less knowledgeable music lovers! It also allows the game to grow with you as you learn more music theory!
3.) There's also a "Beginner's Variant!" - If you're interested in moving past the Allegro Mode, but you don't feel like you're ready for the full game, the instructions give you 3 levels of beginner play! Each level adds in a few more components, so you're easing your way into the game! I think this is absolutely fantastic! And a great way to work on music theory as you go!
4.) The game comes with FIVE Extension packs! - Once you've moved up through the beginner games and played the base game, you can open up the 5 extension packs to add more action cards to your game play!
5.) The game also has "Advanced Play Modes!" - Once you've played the beginner and base games, you can play one of the advanced play modes, which add more complex concepts, like Advanced Chords and Cadences!
Final thoughts:
This game is beautifully made and brilliantly thought up! My absolute favorite part of the game is the fact that it has so many levels! This means it can be played with beginners, musicians, and advanced musicians! It also means that the game can grow along with your music theory knowledge! I'm beyond impressed with the game concept, components, and the many ways to play!
