May 20th is World Bee Day! Yippee! Do you know what that means? A great GAMESCHOOLING opportunity! What should we play? Well, Honey Buzz, by Elf Creek Games, of course! This is a BEAUTIFUL, fun, strategic game about bee accountants! That's right! I said bee accountants! Haha! In Honey Buzz, each player is one of Her Majesty the Queen Bee's accountants. Manage your portion of the hive and worker bees, store nectar, make honey, and sell your honey at the bear market. Whoever makes the most money wins the game!
Here's what I like:
1.) Its BEAUTIFUL! - I'm a sucker for a pretty game - and this one definitely fits the bill! The cover art is so attractive! The hive pieces are so fun. And the little bee meeples are so cute! Beeples!!!!
2.) Game play is straight forward. - I'll admit, when I first saw all the components I felt a bit overwhelmed. But the game is really pretty straight forward when it comes to what you do on a turn. (Now don't get me wrong. This game is FULL of strategy! You can definitely dig into strategy when you play. But gameplay is straight forward enough that a child can play it and have fun - even if they don't understand all the possibly strategies they could employ. This makes it a great family game!)
3.) The math involved! - I love a "sneaky" educational game. If the kids know its meant to be "educational," they don't enjoy it as much. This game has some sneaky math involved. There's coins of different values, so your kids can practice adding money in 1s, 5s, 10s, and 20s. There's also lots of adding involved in scoring, since you have to add your coins, the values of your market cards, and even your leftover pollen and honey.
4.) It involves several game mechanics. - I love a game that has several different mechanics so that it can appeal to several types of board game lovers! Honey Buzz has worker (or, Worker Bee) placement, tile drafting, tile laying, grid coverage, markets, and more!
We really enjoyed this game a lot. I taught my 10 year old to play first - and she immediately wanted to play again! The next day we taught my hubby to play and he also enjoyed it. We'll definitely be playing Honey Buzz on World Bee Day - and many more days to come!
I received this game, free of charge from Elf Creek Games, in exchange for my honest review.
