Sometimes there's nothing better than a simple, fun dice game! Don't get me wrong. I love a long, complicated game with lots of pieces. But sometimes simplicity is what we crave! Especially if we don't have tons of time. Also, I'm arrr-guably a big fan of pirate games (See what I did there?), so reviewing Booty Dice, by Messy Table Games was a no-brainer!
Booty Dice is a simple, push-your-luck dice rolling game that plays 2-6 players in about 15 minutes. Its simple enough for smaller children to play, so its a great family game! Similar to a game like Yahtzee, you roll your dice and then you're allowed to reroll all or some of your dice two more times. Once you're done rolling, you resolve all your dice. Some die faces allow you to take doubloons from the Buried Treasure (the pot). Some die faces require you to give doubloons back to the Buried Treasure. You can also steal from or attack other pirates (players), take a shield from the War Chest, or walk the plank (lose one of your lives). The first person to 25 doubloons - or the last pirate left alive - wins!
What I love about the game:
1.) The theme! - As I mentioned before, I love a good pirate-themed game! And Booty Dice really plays up that theme beautifully!
2.) The simplicity! - This game is easy to teach, easy to learn, and easy to play! That means it's a perfect game to teach new players!
3.) The player count! - It plays up to 6 players and, honestly, the more the merrier! It definitely plays better at 3 or more than it does at 2. And I'd also say its more fun at 4 to 6 players.
4.) The press-your-luck element! - I know some people don't like press-your-luck type games, but I do! And I find these types of games fantastic tools for working on good sportsmanship. To a degree, you're not in control of the outcome, so it's great practice for dealing with disappointment as well. And it's a safe space for that sort of practice because you're having fun whether you're winning or losing!
If y'arrrr a fan of pirate games like I am (Ok, that pun was a little bit of a stretch.) or if you love a good dice rolling push-your-luck game, Booty Dice might be just the ticket for you!
I received this game, free of charge from Messy Table Games, in exchange for my honest review.
