Kodama 3D (Release Date: February 2020, Ages: 14+, Players: 1-4)
Kodama 3D is the latest title in Indie Boards and Cards' popular Kodama Series! Kodama are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. (Similar to dryads in Greek mythology.) And Kodama 3D is a competitive tree-building game!
What I love:
1.) The theme continues, but the game is unique! - They've continued on with the popular Kodama series, but have made something totally new by adding a 3D building element!
2.) It involves building! - It's always fun when a game involves some sort of building/creating!
3.) Kodama meeples! - Seriously! Do I need to say more? Adorable little Kodama Meeples!
4.) It can be played solo! - I love a game with a solo option!
Ripple Rush (by Stronghold Games) (Release Date: April 22, 2020, Ages 14+, Players: 1-5)
Ripple Rush is a flip and write game. I've played several roll and write games (where you roll dice and then fill something out on a sheet), but I've never played a flip and write before. Its similar to the roll and write, except you flip over cards instead of rolling dice.
What I love:
1.) Its compact! - It doesn't take a ton of space, so it's a great game for travel, etc.
2.) It plays up to 5 people! - With a family of 5, its frustrating when we find a game we love that can only play up to 4 people, so we were thrilled to find that this game accommodated us all!
3.) Everyone loved it! Although the game says "14+" for age, we played with a 9 year old, 6 year old, and 5 year old. They were all able to play independently, with the 5 and 6 year olds needing minimal help with ordering numbers.
4.) It was great math practice for the kids! - The numbers have to be ordered in numerical order, so its great practice for kids! It was even great practice for my 5 year old in writing her numbers!
5.) It's fun for all ages! - Although the concept was simple enough for my kids to play with us, it was still fun for my husband and myself! In fact, when we finished the first game he wanted to play a second!
Crossed Words - (Release Date: April 11, 2020, Ages: 14+, Players: 3-6)
This is a great party game, where you try to find a word of phrase that fits two different category. For example, if your categories are ""Plants and Animals" and "Musicians and Bands," you could write down "The Beatles." Or if your categories are "Places in the USA" and "Cartoon Characters," you could write down "Yosemite Sam."
What I love:
1.) It comes with everything you need - except dry erase eraser. But you can use napkins. Or if you're a homeschool mama like me, you already have 3 different dry erase erasers, so you're all good. Haha!!!
2.) There are 110 category cards. - That's a lot of cards! That leads to a lot of possibilities and a lot of replayability!
3.) The dry erase markers are FULL SIZE! - I've played several games that involve dry erase markers and boards instead of pencils and pads of paper. Most of those games come with mini dry erase markers. That's not a huge deal. And they still work fine. But when I see full sized markers I get a little giddy. They're easier to use - and much harder to lose! Haha!
4.) It plays 3-6 players! - Its great to have some games that accommodate more players - for family gatherings, ect. And this one can play as few as 3 - so my hubby, myself, and our oldest can play - or we can have others over and play with 6! Technically, because it's a fun party-type game, and because it has enough components for 6 separate players, you could also play with 12 people (6 teams of 2)! You'd just need to make sure to whisper your answers so others don't hear them.
Make It Happen (Release Date: 2020, Ages: 14+, Players: 2-12)
This game is so new that I couldn't even find a link to it yet! That was super exciting to me, because it means I was one of the FIRST PEOPLE to get to check it out! But that also meant I didn't have any "how to play" videos I could watch. Thankfully, the game instructions are fairly simple and straight forward. They also aren't super long either. Just one sheet folded in half, so 4 small pages total. Basically, this is a dress design game. Its filled with model cards and fabric cards. You have to collect the necessary number of cards for whatever outfit you're trying to make. But be careful! Because each team gets to pick some fabrics that are "hot" (worth more points) and "not" (worth ZERO points)! So you may think you've got a great outfit, but it earns you no points!
What I Love:
1.) The model boards! - The model boards have punched out areas. You stick the fabric cards behind them to show your outfit. Its so neat looking and fun!
2.) It's a unique concept! - I've reviewed A LOT of games. And I own even more. But I've never seen a concept similar to this one. As a mom of 3 fashion-loving girls, this idea is quite intriguing!
3.) It plays small or large groups! There are only 2 player boards, so it can be played by 2 people. But the instructions so you how to play as teams of up to 6! So you can play with as many as 12 people! That makes this game very versatile!
The Coldest Night (Release Date: 2020, Ages: 14+, Players: 1-4)
Again, this is a brand new game. I couldn't even find a link for the game yet! All I know is its supposed to release sometime in 2020! Its a cooperative game where you're stuck in a blizzard. You're trying to sequence the "kindling" that you throw into the fire so that you keep the fire going and you don't freeze to death.
What I Love:
1.) Its small. - If you're looking for a cooperative game that doesn't have a ton of pieces, this is it. Some cards and a few small tokens and that's it!
2.) Its quick. - The game only takes about 20 minutes, so its not a super long, involved game.
3.) It plays 1-4 people. I like that it has an option for single player as well as 2-4 people.
