Great CDs For Your Kids (That Won't Make You Want To Throw Your IPod Out The Window) ;)



Music is powerful. God made it that way. If that weren't true, He wouldn't have made music such an integral part of our worship of Him. The Bible is full of examples of singers and musicians - King David played the harp and wrote songs, Miriam (the sister of Moses) was a songwriter as well.

Music is also a wonderful teaching tool. (I mean, seriously, is there any kid who didn't learn their ABC's by singing the alphabet song?) So why wouldn't we use music to teach our kids about the Word of God? As my little one and I journey through the Bible together, we make great use of music! After reading the day's passage, I often find a related song on my ipod and we just dance and sing and have a ball!

To help all of you and your little ones as you journey through the Bible, I'd like to share some of our favorite CDs...

The first three CDs that I'm going to share are all Sovereign Grace Music for kids. I CAN NOT RECOMMEND THESE CDs ENOUGH!!! They are, in a word, INCREDIBLE!!! Sovereign Grace's music, in general, is FANTASTIC!!! I'd say 90% of the CDs we listen to our Sovereign Grace. Their music is Biblical and beautiful! The best thing about their 3 kids CDs (To Be Like Jesus, Walking with the Wise, and Awesome God) is that they are actually great music! Seriously! I listen to these CDs all the time & I have never felt the desire to throw my ipod or my CD player out the window (something I would feel quite frequently if I were forced to listen to Barney).



1.) "To Be Like Jesus" is a WONDERFUL CD for kids! Their website states - "To Be Like Jesus contains twelve worship songs that teach the fruit of the Spirit in a creative and memorable way. Through these songs kids will learn that Jesus is our perfect example of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,and self-control. More than that, they’ll discover that we can’t be like Jesus unless we trust in the power of His cross to forgive us and the power of His Spirit to change us."

2.) "Walking with the Wise" is another great Sovereign Grace kids CD. The theme of this one is - you guessed it! - WISDOM! Their website states: "The book of Proverbs tells us what it means to be wise. Being wise is more than just knowing a lot or being smart. It involves things like fearing the Lord, listening to others, loving God’s Word, having a joyful heart, being generous, not hiding our sin, working hard, and telling the truth. One of the ways we become wise is by spending time with people who are wiser than us. That’s what it means to 'walk with the wise'."

The songs on this CD are: (1) W-I-S-D-O-M, (2) Where It All Begins, (3) Nuggets of Gold, (4) Trust in the Lord, (5) Make Me Wise, (6) A Good Friend, (7) I Don't Have To Hide, (8) To Tell the Truth, (9) Lazy Bones, (10) A Cheerful Heart, (11) All Ears, (12) A Generous Heart, and (13) Who Can Say

3.) Lastly, but definitely not least, is "Awesome God" - a CD about the greatness of God. Their website states: "How do children learn about God’s greatness? One excellent way is to sing songs that express God’s character and nature in words that kids understand. That’s the premise of the first Sovereign Grace Kids album, Awesome God. Geared towards kids ages 7 and up, the twelve songs on this album have been selected and arranged to help kids better comprehend and worship God for who He is. It’s a great tool for parents and even children’s ministry workers to use in explaining some of the attributes of our great God."

We really love this CD because it exlains many of the attributes of God in language kids can understand. The songs on the CD are: (1) Almighty Creator, (2) Forever God, (3) You Are Always With Me, (4) Who Is Like You, (5) Sovereign One, (6) Mighty Mighty Savior, (7) Jesus Came to Earth, (8) Your Love, (9) Three In One, (10) For You Are Holy, (11) The Gospel Song, and (12) Have You Heard

It was SO HARD to pick a song from this CD as an example - because they are all so incredible! But I finally decided on: "Have You Heard"

He’s the King of KingsHave you heard of the gospel?
Do you know what it is?
It tells us Jesus died for us
To save us from our sins

This is the best news that we could ever hear

I can not recommend these CDs enough! They are simply RIPE with Biblical truths!!!

4.) Another great CD is "Alphabet Bible Verse Chorus Songs" - which gives a Bible verse and a song for each letter of the alphabet! What better way to begin teaching your child to memorize Scripture than with a verse for each letter and a matching song!

5.) The last CD I'm going to recommend today is this WONDERFUL collection that I found called  100 Bible Songs & 100 Bible Stories. This is an AMAZING teaching tool!!! There are 100 Bible stories (each between 30 seconds and 2 minutes long) and a song for each story!

Now,I'm not gonna type out every song and story, because I just don't have the time, but here are a few examples:
Story: "Adam and Eve Disobey" - Corresponding Song: "Be Careful Little Eyes"
Story: "Job"                                  - Corresponding Song: "God is so Good"
Story: "The Prodigal Son"            - Corresponding Song: "I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord"
Story: "Noah's Ark"                      -  Corresponding Song: "Arky, Arky"

Who ever put this CD together did a wonderful job picking songs to go with each story.  My little one and I LOVE listening to this CD and dancing to "Arky, Arky," "This Little Light of Mine," and "Father Abraham!"

In conclusion, give some serious thought to adding some Biblical music to your child's music collection.  After all, how AMAZING will it be the day you hear your little one singing what they've learned about God!!!  :)
