Metaphor Dice Review

Creative writing is such an important subject to me.  I adored my creative writing courses in high school.  And one of my absolute FAVORITE college courses was a poetry writing course. It's such an amazing thing to put your thoughts on paper and have them validated - to have other people read your words and be touched by them.  But I'll be honest.  I often feel tremendous writer's block.  It usually happens at the beginning of the writing process. That jumping-off point at the very beginning can be harrowing.  So I was thrilled to find Metaphor Dice!

Metaphor Dice was created by a professor as he sought to find new ways to help ease some of the fear of writing poetry that his students had. Poetry can be very intimidating.  There's a natural fear of being judged that accompanies creative writing. Students feel a lot of "pressure" to be creative.  In a brilliant stroke, Metaphor Dice was conceptualized as a way to "outsource" some of that pressure of being creative.  Roll the dice until something jumps out at you that you feel would make a good metaphor.

This entire idea seems so novel to me.  And yet, I wonder why no one has thought of it before!  It seems like an amazing way to spur those creative juices on!  The dice contain 13,824 unique metaphor possibilities in one box!

I knew I HAD to share Metaphor Dice with my readers and followers when I watched Taylor Mali, the creator, share how he helped a reluctant poet feel more comfortable with writing.  She came to him, expressing her reluctance with writing by sharing that she felt she was more of a "math/science person." "That's ok," Professor Mali said.  "Because a metaphor is really just an equation between two words."  What an amazing way of explaining the simplicity of a metaphor!  "Let X equal Y.  Let this concept equal this object, plus maybe an adjective." This young woman just needed to understand poetry through something she already understood - math! How many of us have children who think that they are unable to grasp concepts such as metaphors or skills such as writing poetry simply because they are math minded?  Metaphor Dice can help!

But more than that, Metaphor Dice can help the language minded person as well! These dice have so  many great teaching/learning/creating possibilities!  Use them to help with writer's block!  Use them to teach about metaphors! Use them to initiate a writing prompt!  Use them to simply initiate a discussion of words and their power!  Metaphor Dice are powerful! Every teacher should own at least one set!

Lastly, one of my absolute FAVORITE things about Metaphor Dice is how the company is working to help teachers! They've started the #MetaphoricalAngel hashtag on Instagram and on their website you can send a set of Metaphor Dice to a random teacher!  It's completely anonymous.  You have no idea who will get it.  They have no idea who you are.  But it's an amazing and inexpensive way to help a teacher gain a tool that will be immensely helpful in their classroom!

I received these products, free of charge from Metaphor Dice, in exchange for my honest review.
