Skyjo is similar in concept to the card game "Golf." Lowest score wins. But here's why I love Skyjo more that just an average deck of cards and a game of "Golf:"
1.) Its beautiful! - My kids and I LOVE colorful games! We just do! We're more likely to pick up a game if it's aesthetically pleasing. And this game definitely fits that bill!
2.) There are negative numbers! - There are cards with 0, -1, and -2 on them. This is so great for math lessons! Teaching kids about negative numbers on the number line can be complicated. This game is a great, yet simple, way to give them practice working with negative numbers.
3.) It's GREAT number line practice! - You constantly have to judge which card is better - the card you picked from the draw pile or the card you already have turned over. So it's great number line practice for smaller kids. Is 4 closer to zero or is 1 closer to zero?
4.) It's GREAT addition practice! - After each round, you have to add up all your cards! This is great addition practice! And the game doesn't end until someone reaches 100 points, so you get great longer digit addition practice adding each round's score together!
5.) Its plays 2-8 people! - I love a game that can play just 2 people, but also can accommodate a larger crowd! We can play with the entire family, but my husband and I can also play a game after the kids go to bed.
If you're a card game fan, Skyjo is a simple, yet fun one. It has some great math practice for kids (including addition and negative numbers), and it's a fun, relaxed family game.
