Try your hand at fishkeeping. Be one of four players in this puzzly, tile laying game and play a fish owner competing at the National Goldfish Competition. Will your goldfish be voted the most beautiful and win the coveted Best In Show award?
The Finest Fish, by Last Night Games, is a pattern building and tile placement game for 2 to 4 players that takes 30 to 60 minutes.
While this game doesn't include cards with educational facts, like the last game I reviewed, it's still a great jumping off point for an educational discussion. Here are some things you can dig into during or after playing a game of The Finest Fish:
1.) What is a fish? What physical traits does an animal need in order to be considered a fish.
2.) What qualifies as a goldfish? Discuss what specific characteristics distinguish a goldfish from other fish.
3.) What do fish need in order to survive?
4.) What environmental hazards are a danger to fish?
5.) How would you run a National Goldfish Competition? What requirements would you include? What would you be looking for to award Best In Show?
6.) How long do goldfish live?
7.) What's the best environment for a goldfish?
8.) How much do goldfish cost? Are some more rare or more expensive than others?
9.) What do you call the study of fish?
10.) Why are fish important to an ecosystem?
This game can lead to some fantastic educational discussions! And besides the ichthyology discussions, this game gives great practice in strategic thinking, concentration, pattern building, executive function, and much more!
We really enjoyed The Finest Fish. Placing the cute fish scales on your own personal fish board is lots of fun and it's great to see everyone's fish at the end! We also enjoyed creating and finding patterns to win points! This game will definitely get replay at our house!
I received this game, free of charge from Last Night Games, in exchange for my honest review.
