As a homeschooling mom and a history buff, I'm always looking for fun games that will immerse my kids in a historical topic. It can be difficult sometimes, though. Most of the history games I've found are either mostly helpful in terms of geography - which is fabulous on its own - or they're too advanced in terms of gameplay. That's why I was thrilled when Green Feet Games contacted me! They have several games with historical theme that are accessible to kids and play in less than an hour.
I recently reviewed Unforgiven: The Lincoln Assassination Trial, also by Green Feet Games, and I was really impressed with how well it played and how much my 10 year old enjoyed it.
Since that one was a success, I thought I'd give Patriots & Redcoats a look!
Stats:
Plays: 4-10 players
Play Time: 15-25 minutes
Ages: 8+
Game Style: Social Deduction Party Game
Description:
Imagine yourself as a Patriot or a Loyalist in 1776 America. You're either fighting for or against the Revolution. One team wins by discovering and assassinating the opposing team's leader or by winning four victories on the battlefield.
What I love:
1.) The number of players! - This game plays up to 10! That makes it fabulous for parties, family gatherings, or large family game nights.
2.) The historical value! - Even though this is a simple game of social deduction, it's a fabulous jumping off point for a discussion on The US Revolutionary War. It's also a way to begin a discussion on the difficulties of living in that time period. There were families who were split - with some members being Loyal to the Crown, while others were Patriot rebels. Could you trust your neighbors? Could you discuss the politics of the day with them? Or were you constantly worried that someone you knew would betray you?
3.) The short play time! - The game plays in 15-25 minutes, making it an ideal party game. If you only have a short time, you can play once. Add more plays if time allows!
If you're looking for a fun way to add some engaging history to your classroom, homeschool co-op, or family game night, definitely give Patriots & Redcoats a try!
I received this game, free of charge from Green Feet Games, in exchange for my honest review.
