The Berenstain Bears books are all adorable, full of fun illustrations, and educational. This particular books teaches the little bears about the "birthday" of Bear Country. I love how Mike Berenstain explains that Independence Day is our country's birthday. He spends a little time explaining how the USA ( or "Bear Country") fought for its freedom. Then he spends a few pages showing how we celebrate the Fourth of July - with flags, and parades, and fireworks. He also honors those who have fought for our country. And lastly, in true Berenstain Bears style, the bears thank God for "a land that's free." I love that Mike Berenstain doesn't forget to acknowledge God's hand in the formation and protection of our country.
The book comes with a couple of great extras. First, there's a page of patriotic stickers. These are so cute! My four year old wanted at them right away!
Secondly, on the back cover there's "Activities and Questions from Brother and Sister Bear." First there are 3 questions that you can ask your kids to help you gauge their reading/listening comprehension and help you get a discussion started. Then there's a suggestion for 2 activities that you can do with your kids, including decoration their bikes with patriotic decorations just like Brother and Sister Bear do in the book! These little extras take this book past just a reading experience and make it a true learning experience!
